Introduced by the U.S. Navy Bureau of Aeronautics in 1940, the M-422 Flight Jacket became the official standard leather flight jacket for U.S. Naval Aviators. Designed specifically for carrier-based operations, it replaced earlier Navy flight jackets while remaining distinct from the Army Air Corps A-2. The later M-422A differed from the original M-422 in only one significant detail: the addition of a vertical pencil slot on the left pocket. Aside from this improvement, the overall pattern, materials, and construction remained unchanged. Since the majority of WWII production jackets were M-422A models, collectors commonly refer to both versions simply as the M-422 series.
