A Rare Transitional WWII Flight Jacket

Introduced during WWII as part of the Army-Navy standardization effort, the AN-J-3 represents a fascinating chapter in the development of American military flight jackets.

Produced in relatively limited numbers, original AN-J-3 jackets are considerably less common today than the famous A-2. Its design combines characteristics associated with both Army and Navy flight jackets, creating a distinctive transitional style that stands apart from more familiar wartime models.

A Distinctive Hybrid Design

The AN-J-3 retains several recognizable characteristics associated with the A-2, including:

• Leather turn-down collar
• Front zipper closure
• Shoulder epaulets
• Clean waist-length military silhouette

At the same time, other construction details show a strong relationship with U.S. Navy flight-jacket design:

• Button-closure patch pockets
• Double-row pocket stitching
• Action-back construction for improved movement
• Underarm construction designed for greater mobility
• Distinctive multi-panel back construction

Compared with the relatively simple A-2, the AN-J-3 uses a more complicated pattern and construction. The result is a jacket with greater freedom of movement while retaining the clean appearance of a classic WWII leather flight jacket.

1.3 mm Vegetable-Tanned Horsehide

This reproduction is made from approximately 1.3 mm full-grain horsehide in a rich Chocolate Brown finish. The leather is:

• Full-grain horsehide
• Approximately 1.3 mm thick
• Vegetable tanned
• Aniline finished
• Chocolate Brown

The leather has a balanced feel — substantial enough to retain the character expected from a horsehide flight jacket while remaining comfortable for regular wear. Because of the characteristics of vegetable-tanned aniline leather, the surface can gradually develop natural creases, grain variation and patina with use. These changes are part of the natural aging process of the leather and help each jacket develop its own individual character.

Historically Inspired Contrast Stitching

Contrast thread is used throughout the jacket to recreate the visual character found on vintage examples. Against the dark Chocolate Brown horsehide, the lighter stitching clearly defines the jacket's complex panel construction. Contrast stitching is also unforgiving during production — irregular stitching is much easier to see — so accurate cutting and sewing are especially important.

Japanese Waldes Zipper

The jacket is equipped with a WALDES zipper made in Japan, selected for its vintage appearance and mechanical character. Its understated matte silver finish complements the Chocolate Brown horsehide and the overall WWII-inspired appearance of the jacket.
