Introduced by the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1943, the Type B-11 marked an important change in American cold-weather flight clothing.
Before the B-11, heavy winter flight garments such as the B-3 and B-7 relied mainly on sheepskin construction. Although warm, they were heavy, expensive, and more difficult to produce on a large scale.
The B-11 introduced a more practical solution: a cotton outer shell combined with a warm alpaca-wool blend pile lining. This construction provided excellent cold-weather protection while reducing weight and production cost, and making the garment easier to maintain.
The idea of combining a wind-resistant fabric shell with a separate insulating lining would continue to influence later U.S. military cold-weather clothing, as well as civilian workwear and outdoor jackets.

ORIGINAL DESIGN PURPOSE
The B-11 was developed as a cold-weather flight parka for USAAF aircrews operating in severe winter conditions. Its long body, insulated construction and protective hood were designed to provide warmth while maintaining practical everyday movement.
Recommended temperature range: approximately -20°C to 0°C (-4°F to 32°F), depending on activity level and layering.
