A reproduction of the classic post-WWII U.S. Navy G-1 flight jacket, made from vegetable-tanned goatskin with a genuine shearling collar and wool rib-knit cuffs and waistband.
FROM THE M-422A TO THE G-1
After World War II, U.S. military aviation entered a new era.
Drawing heavily from the proven M-422A naval flight jacket, the U.S. Navy developed the 55-J-14 specification. Adopted in 1947, this new jacket became known as the G-1 and succeeded earlier M-422A and AN-series naval aviation jackets.
The G-1 retained many of the features that made WWII-era Navy flight jackets distinctive while introducing a cleaner postwar appearance.
VEGETABLE-TANNED GOATSKIN
The jacket is made from full vegetable-tanned goatskin.
Goatskin is naturally supple and durable, with a distinctive fine grain. It has a long history in naval aviation clothing because of its combination of flexibility, strength, and suitability for humid maritime environments.
GENUINE SHEARLING COLLAR
The collar is made from genuine sheepskin shearling.
Compared with the earlier M-422A, the G-1 collar has a slightly narrower and cleaner profile, contributing to the more streamlined appearance of the postwar jacket.
CLASSIC BI-SWING ACTION BACK
The back retains the distinctive naval aviation bi-swing construction inherited from earlier WWII flight jackets.
The expanding back pleats provide additional shoulder and arm movement without requiring an excessively loose body.
This became one of the defining construction features of the G-1.
FUNCTIONAL FRONT POCKETS
Two front patch pockets maintain the traditional naval flight-jacket layout.
The left pocket includes a vertical pencil slot, continuing a practical feature found on earlier Navy aviation jackets.
Compared with the more pronounced scalloped pocket-flap shape associated with the M-422A, the G-1 presents a cleaner and straighter postwar appearance.
WOOL RIB KNIT
Deep brown wool rib-knit cuffs and waistband help seal the jacket against wind while maintaining the characteristic short flight-jacket silhouette.
NYLON LINING
The interior uses a brown nylon lining with three-dimensional pattern construction designed to improve fit and wearing comfort.
BRASS ZIPPER
The front closure uses a Waldes No. 5 brass metal zipper, complementing the traditional materials and vintage military character of the jacket.
FROM KOREA TO THE JET AGE
The G-1 became closely associated with U.S. naval aviation during the Korean War, when naval and Marine aviators operated aircraft ranging from piston-powered fighters to early carrier-based jets.
It remained an enduring part of American naval aviation culture through the Vietnam era and the decades that followed.
More than simply a leather bomber jacket, the G-1 represents the transition from WWII naval aviation into the jet age and became one of the most recognizable flight-jacket designs in American military history.
