Developed from combat experience in North Africa and standardized in 1943, the M-1943 Field Jacket represented an important step forward in the U.S. Army’s combat clothing system during World War II.
Its practical four-pocket design was influenced by the field and hunting jackets of the period, combining protection, carrying capacity, and freedom of movement. After its introduction, the M-1943 became widely associated with U.S. Army operations in the European Theater.
MATERIAL & CONSTRUCTION
Shell:
100% high-density cotton fabric with a substantial, durable hand feel.
Four-Pocket Design:
The front features four large flap pockets with concealed button closures, providing generous storage while maintaining the clean appearance of the original field-jacket design.
Reinforced Lower Pockets:
The lower pockets are reinforced internally with heavy white cotton canvas for improved durability and carrying capacity.
Collar:
A convertible collar can be worn open or buttoned closed for additional protection.
Adjustable Cuffs:
The roomy sleeves provide freedom of movement, while the cuffs can be tightened when needed.
Adjustable Waist:
An internal drawcord allows the waist to be adjusted for fit and wind protection. The drawcord openings use small rounded keyhole-style buttonholes.
HISTORICAL CONSTRUCTION DETAILS
One of the details that distinguishes the M-1943 from later field jackets is its finer, denser stitching.
The collar back uses closely spaced reinforcement stitching that secures the outer collar to the internal support fabric, helping the collar maintain its shape and reducing unwanted wrinkling.
Compared with the later M-65, the M-43 uses finer sewing thread and a denser stitch pattern, reflecting the construction characteristics of period hunting and field garments.
The jacket also contains numerous buttons and traditional keyhole-style buttonholes. For this reproduction, particular attention was paid to the appearance and construction of these details, including cotton-based buttonhole stitching and reinforced rounded-head, tapered-tail buttonholes.
CHARACTER
The M-1943 is more than a classic four-pocket military jacket. Its balanced proportions, practical construction, and distinctive WWII-era details made it one of the most recognizable U.S. Army field jackets of the period.
This reproduction is intended for collectors, military clothing enthusiasts, vintage-style wear, and anyone who appreciates the functional design of classic WWII field garments.
