The Type N-3B is one of the most recognizable cold-weather flight parkas developed for military aviation use. Its long silhouette, protective hood, wool insulation, and distinctive front construction were designed to provide warmth while still allowing the wearer to move comfortably. This reproduction focuses on the classic proportions, functional structure, and distinctive details of the N-3B. Materials & Construction * Custom-made NYLON 66 shell and lining * 100% wool insulation * Heavy-duty No. 10 brass self-locking zipper with left-hand insertion * Reinforced cuffs with internal wool rib-knit cuffs * Handwarmer pockets lined with thick fleece on the back-of-hand side and wool fabric on the palm side * Soft faux fur hood trim * High-density synthetic fleece hood lining * Internal waist adjustment drawcord Distinctive Front Wind Flap One important identifying feature of the N-3B is the length of the front wind flap. The flap does not extend all the way to the bottom hem. Instead, it ends at approximately two-thirds of the jacket length, roughly level with the lower pocket flaps. Although a full-length wind flap might appear to offer more protection, it can restrict movement when bending, sitting, or crouching. The shorter original-style construction provides a better balance between cold-weather protection and mobility. This proportion is also an important part of the classic N-3B silhouette. Warm Handwarmer Pockets The upper and lower front pockets are designed not only for storage but also for warmth. The back-of-hand side uses a soft fleece lining, while the palm side uses wool fabric. This construction helps retain warmth and provides a comfortable place to protect the hands in cold weather. Protective Cold-Weather Hood The N-3B hood is one of the most distinctive features of the jacket. Its large integrated hood is designed to provide substantial protection around the head and face. The soft faux fur trim around the hood opening helps reduce direct exposure to wind and snow. A rear hood adjustment strap allows the wearer to adjust the position of the hood opening and improve visibility. The hood interior is lined with high-density synthetic fleece for additional warmth and comfort. The faux fur trim is externally sewn onto the hood, following the traditional construction method used on the N-2/N-3 family. This also makes future replacement easier if necessary. Wool Insulation The interior uses 100% wool insulation rather than conventional loose synthetic padding. The structured wool layer helps provide warmth while maintaining the firm and balanced shape associated with the N-2/N-3 series. This construction gives the jacket a substantial cold-weather feel without making it excessively bulky like a heavily filled down jacket. Classic Military Aviation Style The N-3B combines a long cold-weather silhouette, protective hood, rib-knit inner cuffs, warm handwarmer pockets, and structured wool insulation. Gently shake the jacket and leave it hanging or lying flat overnight. The wool insulation will gradually recover its natural shape and volume.
