A reproduction of the iconic U.S. military M-1951 Fishtail Parka, combining Korean War-era field functionality with one of the most recognizable military silhouettes of the 20th century.
FROM THE KOREAN WAR
Developed during the Korean War era, the M-1951 parka was designed around two essential requirements: warmth and mobility.
Instead of relying on an excessively heavy and restrictive outer garment, the M-51 used a practical three-quarter-length silhouette that provided additional body coverage while allowing soldiers to move more freely.
The outer shell is made from high-density 100% cotton fabric with a water-repellent treatment, helping provide protection against wind, snow, and light precipitation.
WHY IS IT CALLED A “FISHTAIL” PARKA?
The most recognizable feature of the M-51 is its split rear hem.
The distinctive “fishtail” was not originally created as a fashion detail.
The split lower section could be secured around the legs, helping reduce cold air entering from underneath the parka during severe weather.
This functional military construction eventually gave the M-51 its famous “Fishtail Parka” nickname.
MILITARY CONSTRUCTION
This reproduction retains the characteristic long, loose-fitting silhouette of the M-51.
The roomy military cut allows freedom of movement and also leaves space for layering underneath during colder weather.
The shell uses high-density double-layer carded cotton fabric with a water-repellent treatment, while the interior uses a 100% cotton plain-weave lining.
Additional military-inspired details include the adjustable hood, front storm protection, adjustable cuffs, waist and hem drawcords, and the distinctive rear fishtail construction.
FROM MILITARY SURPLUS TO MOD CULTURE
The story of the Fishtail Parka did not end with military service.
After the war, surplus American military parkas became available through army surplus stores and eventually found an entirely new audience in Britain.
During the 1960s, the parka became closely associated with British Mod culture.
Mods were known for sharp clothing, music, late-night clubs, and Italian scooters such as Vespa and Lambretta. The oversized military parka provided a practical outer layer that could be worn over smarter clothing while riding a scooter.
A piece of functional American military clothing had unexpectedly become an icon of British youth culture.
That combination of military history, practical design, and postwar subculture is a major reason the M-51 Fishtail Parka remains recognizable today.
