A faithful reproduction of the B-7, one of the most distinctive heavy cold-weather flight coats developed for early U.S. military aviation. Designed for severe winter environments, the B-7 represents an era when maximum warmth and protection were prioritized over lightweight construction. Its substantial sheepskin body, oversized protective hood, long silhouette, and extensive leather reinforcement give it an unmistakable early military character. THE B-7 — BUILT FOR EXTREME COLD The B-7 was developed in the early 1940s as a specialized cold-weather garment for U.S. military aviation personnel operating in extremely cold environments. Unlike shorter flight jackets designed primarily for cockpit use, the B-7 provides considerably more body coverage. Its longer silhouette, heavy shearling construction, protective hood, and substantial collar area were designed around serious winter protection. The B-7 was produced for only a relatively short period. Its construction required a considerable amount of sheepskin and was expensive to manufacture. Later generations of military cold-weather clothing gradually moved toward different materials and construction systems. This short production history, combined with its unusual appearance and substantial construction, makes the B-7 one of the most recognizable early American cold-weather flight coats. HIGH-DENSITY AUSTRALIAN SHEEPSKIN The main body is constructed from high-density natural Australian sheepskin shearling. The natural wool pile is approximately 18 mm long and has a slightly curled texture, giving the coat the thick and substantial appearance characteristic of traditional cold-weather shearling garments. The leather exterior and wool interior are two sides of the same natural sheepskin. This construction creates a very different feel from a conventional leather jacket with a separate lining. The natural wool remains directly attached to the hide, producing the substantial structure and distinctive character associated with traditional shearling flight clothing. OVERSIZED PROTECTIVE HOOD One of the most recognizable features of the B-7 is its large cold-weather hood. The oversized hood provides extensive coverage around the head and neck and is finished with a long-pile faux fur trim. Combined with the thick shearling construction around the collar and upper body, the hood gives the B-7 its unmistakable extreme-weather silhouette. VEGETABLE-TANNED GOATSKIN DETAILS Vegetable-tanned goatskin is used for the large front pockets and selected reinforcement areas. The contrasting brown goatskin panels create one of the B-7’s most distinctive visual characteristics while also reinforcing areas that receive frequent handling and wear. Vegetable-tanned leather reinforcement strips are also used along selected connecting seams. These contrasting leather details highlight the complex panel construction of the coat and reproduce the rugged appearance associated with early military shearling garments. LEATHER ADJUSTMENT STRAPS The adjustment straps are made from vegetable-tanned leather and paired with metal adjustment hardware. The natural character of vegetable-tanned leather allows the straps to develop additional patina and character through use. Together with the contrasting reinforcement strips and pockets, these details give the coat the substantial hardware and leatherwork expected from a traditional military reproduction. TRADITIONAL FRONT CLOSURE The front of the B-7 features a distinctive combination of leather tabs, buttons, and heavy shearling construction. Rather than simplifying these details for modern fashion production, this reproduction retains the unusual historical appearance that gives the B-7 its unique identity. The exposed shearling running along the front opening also visually emphasizes the thickness and construction of the natural sheepskin. LARGE CONTRAST FRONT POCKETS Two oversized vegetable-tanned goatskin pockets are positioned on the lower front of the coat. Their contrasting brown leather creates a striking visual break against the lighter-colored sheepskin body and contributes significantly to the recognizable B-7 appearance. Additional zippered hand pockets provide convenient storage and everyday functionality. FULL SHEARLING CONSTRUCTION Natural shearling continues throughout the coat, including the body and sleeves. The exposed wool at the cuffs, front opening, lower hem, collar, and hood area shows the substantial nature of the construction. This is not intended to feel like a lightweight modern fashion jacket. The weight, thickness, and structure are an important part of the traditional B-7 character. HISTORICAL REPRODUCTION CONSTRUCTION The reproduction focuses on preserving the unusual construction details that distinguish the B-7 from more common WWII flight jackets. Attention has been given to the overall silhouette, panel arrangement, hood construction, contrasting leather reinforcement, large front pockets, adjustment straps, seam placement, and exposed shearling details. The result retains the rugged, substantial appearance that made the original B-7 such a distinctive piece of early cold-weather aviation clothing.
